Fire safety is an essential aspect of daily life, and it's crucial to take steps to prevent fires and be prepared in a fire emergency. Here are some dos and don'ts of fire safety:
Dos:
Have working smoke detectors on every level of your home and in each bedroom. Test them monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.
To create and practice a fire escape plan with your family. Identify two ways out of each room, and choose a meeting spot outside the home.
Keep a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location, and make sure everyone in your household knows how to use it.
Keep flammable materials, such as paper, cleaning supplies, and curtains, away from heat sources.
Do be mindful of cooking safety. Stay in the kitchen when cooking, and keep a close eye on food cooking on the stove.
Don'ts:
Don't leave candles or cigarettes unattended.
Don't overload outlets or extension cords.
Don't leave appliances, such as stoves or irons, on when not in use.
Don't store flammable liquids near heat sources, such as gasoline or paint thinner.
Don't use water to extinguish a grease fire. Instead, use a fire extinguisher or cover the fire with a pot lid.
Following these dos and don'ts can help prevent fires and be prepared for a fire emergency. Remember, in case of a fire, the most important thing is to get out of the building as quickly and safely as possible. Call 911 once you are outside and in a safe location.
