Current List of Commonly Cited OSHA Safety Violations

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) is a federal agency that establishes and enforces workplace safety rules. Employers who fail to comply with these standards can be cited for violations, resulting in fines and other penalties.

There are many types of OSHA violations, but some are cited more frequently than others. Here is a current list of some of the most commonly cited OSHA violations:

  • Fall Protection: Employers are required to provide fall protection for employees working at heights of six feet or more. This can include guardrails, safety nets, and personal fall arrest systems.

  • Hazard Communication: Employers must provide employees with information and training about the chemicals they may be exposed to in the workplace. This includes providing Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and labeling containers of hazardous chemicals.

  • Scaffolding: Employers are required to provide a safe structure for employees who are working at heights. This includes ensuring that the frame is adequately constructed and maintained and that employees are trained to use it safely.

  • Respiratory Protection: Employers must provide respiratory protection for employees exposed to harmful air contaminants. This includes providing respirators and training employees on how to use them properly.

  • Ladders: Employers are required to provide safe ladders for employees who are working at heights. This includes ensuring that ladders are in good condition and that employees are trained to use them safely.

  • Electrical Wiring Methods: Employers must ensure that electrical wiring is installed correctly and maintained and that employees are trained to work safely with electrical equipment.

  • Powered Industrial Trucks: Employers must ensure that powered industrial trucks (such as forklifts) are used safely in the workplace. This includes training employees who operate these trucks and ensuring that the trucks are in good condition.

  • Machine Guarding: Employers must ensure that machines in the workplace are properly guarded to prevent employees from being injured. This includes installing guards on moving parts and providing training on using machines safely.

These are just a few examples of the most commonly cited OSHA violations. Employers should always be aware of the safety standards that apply to their workplaces and take steps to ensure that they comply.
